Waiting with My Foot in the Door

It was over a decade ago I when walked on the beach of South Africa; I cannot blot out from my memory the young orphan boys begging for spare change. They risked being chased off by local store workers with crops, similar to the ones used in horseback riding, for amounts totaling less than our American dime.  It was there that my heart was broken for those who do not have a mother's love.  There were many opportunities to hear God's whispers on long van rides through the African country side.  His heart is for the orphan, and He has planted the desire of adoptive motherhood in mine.  I get a little over excited when I hear God's calling.  I left Africa with plans to become a successful therapist and to sell all I had to move to South Africa.  I was going buy a house and open my home to children like the ones I had seen on the boardwalk.  However, God had set a different path under my feet and called me to trust His plan over mine.  In a matter of months before my undergrad graduation my heart was captured by a young man, and my self drawn plans were interrupted for a greater purpose.  Greater than selling everything and entering the mission field in Africa?  Yes.  It had been made clear that His purpose for me is in my home. It is where I can be most effective for His kingdom.  My mission field is in the everyday battlefield of raising a family in God's word.
Before we were married, Matt and I spoke of our desires for children.  Matt envisioned two children and didn't feel that adoption was for him.  I, on the other hand, wanted four children and would adopt as many as God would will.  Though our plans couldn't be more different, we were two people who trusted God's plan over our own.  We knew He would bless us with as many children as He had planned.  I accepted Matt's stance on adoption because you can't be kind of committed to adoption; you have to dive in with all your heart.  Parenthood in general isn't for the faint of heart.  It is an all consuming call to bravery, strength, commitment, and relentless love.  It is mission impossible, without Christ.  Though worth every struggle, it is hard to endure even with your own flesh and blood.  We as parents are commissioned with the task of not only equipping our children with necessary skills for survival, but for training them to thrive.  We step onto the battlefield of a broken world everyday, equipped with Sword and Shield, as dedicated warriors with the promise: if we teach and train them in God's word, it will not depart from them.  Adoption means being willing to take on the parenting challenge and carry the extra baggage that has been unfairly packed in a child's heart. Being willing to be vulnerable, even at the risk of heart break to be a mere reflection of Jesus' love.  I couldn't ask Matt to make that sacrifice, only God could.
We had been married for nearly eight years when we moved to Wisconsin and started attending Elmbrook Church, a mission driven church both globally and locally.  It was Mother's Day three years ago when they played a video about foster care.  After church, we were visiting with friends, and I began sharing my heart with my dear friend. "I would love to foster or adopt, but Matt wouldn't want to."  Matt had overheard my comment in the other room and peeked around the corner and said, "Yes, I would."  I was pleasantly surprised at his statement and saw it as an open door for future conversations.  I made sure to stick my foot in it so that it couldn't close.  Over the next couple of years, opportunities passed where I would bring up my hearts desire, hoping he would share my enthusiasm.  More times than not our conversations would end in frustration, because Matt wanted to process and I wanted action.  I had began to push on that door and he wasn't ready to open it fully.  I knew if I kept pushing I would get my yes, but it would be a bitter yes, instead of a wholehearted, sweet yes.  So I stopped pushing and prayed, "God please either change his heart or help me close this door."  God's answer was for me to be quiet and still.  Ahh, He knows that's not in my DNA, but He didn't tell me to take my foot from the door! So I kept hoping and praying for my chance to adopt.  We are still praying about this life changing decision for our family and Matt's heart has slowly grown open to consider all options.  He has even registered us for a conference called Wait No More, hosted by our church and sponsored by Focus on the Family.  This step is exciting and I pray that God speak clearly to our hearts and that the attending families prayerfully listen to God's calling.  Though exciting, I too have to be ready to accept Matt's decision one way or another.  Regardless of whether we adopt or not, I wholeheartedly feel that I have a little boy in this world that I am called to love and pray for.  I would love for him to be my adopted son, but accept what ever role God gives me in his life.  Here is my letter to him:

To my little boy,

You're on my heart today, like many days before. My eyes are swollen with tears thinking of where you may be, but my heart is steadfast in knowing you are mine to pray for.  I sometimes wonder if you are still being crafted in those quiet moments when only God knows of your existence or if you have seen hardship in your tender years.  Wherever you are, I know that God has a plan for you and one day I will be part of it.
I wonder about your personality and what your favorite foods are.  I want to send you to school in the morning with a hug and kiss; bidding you, "Have the best day ever." I want to hold you in my arms and sing, "You are my Sunshine."  I want you to know and experience your mother's passionate love and comfort in times of celebration and in need.
I know the promises that God has for you and I know that not a moment is wasted, even if we are apart.  I can't wait to speak His promises over you, but for now I will pray them over you.  I pray that God bless you and keep you safe, that your heart and mind be guarded by the Almighty, and you be sheltered by His wings. Be overwhelmed by His presence and aware of His unfailing love.  I pray that you are strengthened in the moments that we are apart, and your heart is kept open to hear the voice of God in your current circumstances.
I pray that God continue to prepare my heart and your father's, so that we can be a reflection of His love.  May our hearts be filled with His grace and mercy so that they overflow with teaching and encouragement. Where we are lacking, may we rely on Him for wisdom and understanding, because He will provide in abundance.  May you be drawn closer to Him because you see His strength in our human frailty.
I am not sure when I will be able to hold you in my arms or gaze into your eyes, my precious son, but when that day comes I will rejoice for you are home.  With thanksgiving I will wait for you and continue to pray.

Love,
Your Forever Mommy

Simple and Cute Cash Envelopes - Free Pattern and Instructions

Nearly a year and a half ago my husband and I committed to a cash envelope system and we are so happy we did! I like spending money and my husband does not.  Before the envelope system, he would keep tabs on the bank balance while I went around my domestic duties: buying groceries, keeping up the household, and clothing shopping for our two growing children.  I was an expert at using coupons, shopping clearance and finding rock bottom deals. What I was not good at was keeping track of my spending.  Matt would tell me when we were nearing "broke" for the month. AHHHH!  I would be frustrated with myself for over spending, and filled with buyers remorse over all the fab deals I scored.  It would frustrate him that I couldn't stick to our budget when using the debit card.  I have the same problem with calories, I consume more than I should unless I keep track of them.
We had read The The Total Money Makeover and were applying a few of his principles, but hadn't tried the cash envelopes.  After several months of going over budget, we decided that we had to use the cash system to stay on track.  Paying down debt was important to us and not overspending was crucial.  We evaluated our spending, set realistic goals, and recalculated our monthly budget.
We now utilize the cash envelope system and online bill pay to keep our budget in check.  We try to use a Zero Balance budget meaning our income-bills-expenses=0.  Matt pays bills like the mortgage, utilities, and phone online.  We take out $600 in cash every month: $400 for grocery/dining out, $100 for household, $50 for clothing, and $50 for misc. spending.  We use our debit card for gas mainly because pay at the pump is convenient, but still have set a budget and stick to it.  We usually are under budget for gas and that allows us to pay more towards what we owe.
It is a great feeling when you pay off credit cards and pay down debt.  Using cash envelopes has been a liberating experience.  At first I felt humbled when I would have to tell a friend that I couldn't go out to eat because it didn't fit into our budget, but most people understood.  It took a few months and some creative planing to be able to stretch our money through the month.  Matt and I usually go out to eat 2-3 time per month for date night and strive to spend $25 or less, including tip.  We often frequent a local Mexican restaurant and order from the a la cart menu. Ordering off the a la cart menu helps keep our bill and calorie intake low.  We never leave hungry.  We also eat well at home utilizing coupons and stocking up during sales.  My Milwaukee Mommy is a great resource for a coupon/ad match up. She also posts great online shopping deals.  If we purchase items online we remove the money from the envelope as if it were spent and redeposit it into the account.  This practice also applies to the Target Red Debit Card which we use because it saves us an extra 5% on our purchases at Target.  We have become very efficient with our cash system and have had a few months when there was surplus.  Clothing is the only envelope that we let accumulate, if there is a $20 surplus in household from March we only withdraw $580 for April. Then we apply the $20 March surplus to our efforts to pay down debt.  At first it can seem impossible, but with hard work and dedication, I promise it does get easier.

There are many tools to help you organize your cash system.

1. A Plastic File Folder

2. Dave Ramsey's Deluxe Executive Envelope System

3. The Trendy Savvycents

4. Crafty and Cute

The choices were a little overwhelming and I wanted a combination between Crafty and Trendy but didn't want to spend a lot of money.  So I decided to make my own and here is how:
Choose your fabrics and interface.  Cut two 7.25" squares of fabric and one square of iron on interface per envelope.

Fuse the interface to the back side of one fabric square.  This will stiffen your fabric so that it keeps its shape.

With the right sides together, sew around the edges using the edge of the presser foot as your guide, leaving an inch open for turning your envelope right side out,

Cut the corners off, do not cut the into the seem. Then turn your envelope right sides out.

Press your envelope with an iron tucking the open edge.

Sew a top stitch along the opening of your envelope.  Fold edges together and sew along the side being careful to tuck in the open edge.

Press your final envelope.

I created labels for my first set of envelopes.  You can make them buy cutting 0.5" by 1.5" strips of fabric and sewing them on before your close your sides.  I have chosen to go with Avery No-Iron Clothing Labels this time.  I plan on making a matching wallet too!

Monthly Budget Planning - FREE FRIDAY PRINTABLE

Living on a budget takes some time and effort, but is well worth it.  Here is a tool to help you get started with your family's budget.

We use online payment tools to pay the monthly bills like our mortgage, utilities, phone and the such.  We use a cash envelope system for all the other monthly expenses and I will post on that soon.
Click on photo for the FREE Budget Planner
To get started gather bank and credit card statements, write down where and how you spent your money last month.  Compare your spending to the suggested budget table in this printable.  The suggested budget percentages are from Dave Ramsey'sThe The Total Money Makeover.  Then make adjustments for your next month's budget.
Track your spending by keeping all your receipts for the following month and find areas that you can cut your spending.  Set realistic goals, and stick to them.  We found that shopping sales and using coupons helped us cut our grocery bill drastically.  We budget $400 total for grocery and dinning out per month.  This usually breaks down to $75 per week for grocery and $25 for dinning out.  We stock up on items that go one sale and freeze meats and produce when needed.  A great resource for learning when to stock up on items is the book Saving Savvy: Smart and Easy Ways to Cut Your Spending in Half and Raise Your Standard of Living...and Giving, by Kelly Hancock. It took a few months to get a stocked pantry and freezer, but now it is all set and we are able to restock when needed.
Good luck with your budgeting adventures!

Life is a Highway

Fully trusting God isn't an easy thing to do.  My pride often fools me into believing that my timing is better than God's.  Like Sarah in Genesis, I know that there is a promise of good for my future, but I struggle to do things my way instead of God's.  This compulsive need to be in control hinders my ability to see His divine plan unfold as it should.  God has marked my path so why do I choose to go my own way.  It is like setting my GPS but failing to heed its directions. There have been many u-turns because of my intuition, and poor since of direction.  A calm voice simply says  "Recalculating..." and before I know it a new path is routed for me. My journey becomes a little longer but my destination stays constant.
I wish I could say that my faith was different than my navigational skills but its not.  God's Word is a road map for my life, He is the ultimate navigator. Sometimes He says take the slow back roads but I want to take the interstate. Though faster is not always better.  When I was much younger I used to drive with the radio blaring, testing the boundaries of the posted speed limits.  I considered them mere suggestions, until I was pulled over by a traffic officer.  I tried to excuse my disregard for the law by explaining that I was running late for work. "You'd have gotten there faster if you didn't have to wait for me to write this ticket" he commented as I handed him my licence and registration. The officer was right had I followed the rules, I would have gotten to work a few minutes late, but without a traffic violation to explain to my parents.  My driving has improved as I matured and I try hard to yield to the speed limits. Though, I will confess sometimes I will get all caught up in a worship song and get a little heavy footed.  Time has also helped my faith grow stronger and the backboards more desirable. There are still times when I jump on the highway.  This usually happens when I am distracted by the fast pace of our rushing society.  On the highway I often miss opportunities to stop and reflect on the directions.  Thankfully, the Holy Spirit within me to calmly whispers recalculating, and gently instructs me back to the path I was meant to travel.

No More Sticky Raisins

Sticky raisins make sticky fingers, and sticky fingers make sticky messes!  My girls love raisins, but not the way their fingers were all sticky after eating them.  For a while we avoided snacking on them until a friend shared some dry dates with me.  I noticed they had been coated with a light dusting of flour and thought about our raisin problem.  Four was a great solution to our sticky situation!

It really doesn't take very much flour to coat 20 oz of raisins.  We start with a little less than a quarter cup of flour.  I use organic coconut flour.  It is gluten free and has a subtle flavor that compliments the raisins. You can use any flour you have available. First mix the flour with one cup of raisins at a time getting them well coated. Sift out the extra flour. Pour the raisins into a class jar for storage. Repeat these steps until all the raisins are coated.  You will have plenty of flour left.  Place it in a small jar or baggie for the next round of raisin coating or use it for baking right after your done.

Lemon Fresh

I always order water with lemon, so it is no wonder that I love adding lemon oil to my water bottle.  It gives it a fresh taste.  I also have found that I drink more water, because I enjoy the taste.  Lemon oil has many uses and benefits.  By adding it to my water I am ingesting powerful antioxidants and digestive benefits.  You'll want to use a Glass Water Bottle with Flip Lid if you are going to drink lemon oil in your water, because the lemon oil will breakdown plastics.

Lemon Oil is also great for cooking and baking. Oil can be a substitute in any recipe that calls for lemon zest or juice. Below is one of my favorite cookie recipes.

An Intentional Act of Kindness

Who doesn't love a free Starbucks? I love paying for coffee for the person behind in the drive through.  However, I am frugal, by marriage. Frequenting Starbucks is not a common occurrence, so I am not the saint de la caffeine.  I do like to smile, and the last time I checked smiles are free: so I do give them out often.  Sometimes I will even through in a wave. (It's a Southern thing.)  Most of the time my smiles are briefly greeted with a polite smile in return.  The wave, on the other hand, gets me some pretty weird looks in Wisconsin.  I do recall one instance of this random act of smiling, at a woman as I walked out of Sendick's and she walked in, backfiring. Moments after our smiling encounter, she found me in the parking lot in order to ask me if we knew each other.  I replied, "no" and she asked, "Then why did you smile at me?"  "Just because," I answered.  She then turned and walked back into the market perturbed.  Other than this instance, my joy filled expression is generally accepted.  I love people.  I am energized in crowds, and smiles come naturally.  Random people make me smile, so I guess they are serving me a random act of kindness and I am thankful to receive them.
Smiles at strangers are random and fleeting opportunities to show the love of Christ.  I don't mean to shadow their importance, but I have found that a greater impact can be made through intentional acts of kindness.  Christ made the greatest impact on humanity through an intentional act of kindness, by taking up the cross.  His greatest commandment of us is to love God and love each other.  In 2 John, His word makes it clear that loving each other should not be a new concept to us as believers. Further more He calls us to action stating that love means doing.  Doing simple and grand gestures to live out His LOVE so that the world may see our deeds and know He is God.
This weekend my family was blessed to be the recipients of intentional act of kindness.  We had been out of town so our friends dropped off a meal for us, in honor of Charlie Sawyer.  Our fridge was bare and it was nice having something ready for is when we returned.  We sat down at the table as a family, my loving husband, my two healthy children, and myself to enjoy this meal and gratitude overwhelmed me.  Little Charlie and a special little guy named Nathan were the guest of honor this evening at our dinner table, and their lives remembered and celebrated in our prayers.  Both Charlie and Nathan have legacies of love marked by hope, and complete dependence on God.  Their families made the decision to DO LOVE, though it came at great cost. I have never met Charlie or his family, but have read about their experience on The Charlie Sawyer Project.  He was born on April 10, 2014.  God's intentional acts of love came through Charlie's sweet smiles and they created a ripple effect across our nation, inspiring countless intentional acts of kindness.  Seven months of fighting, loving, and trusting built a place of hope and healing through faith in Jesus.  I am not surprised at how great of an impact God makes through the frailty of an infant, rather I am grateful for His willingness reveal eternal blessings through their lives.  My perspective and life were changed the day I met Nathan.
__________

I had been wrestling with bitterness. I loved God but my heart was hardening.  I could barely see past my circumstances, and was ready to give up on many dreams, including Olive You Photography.  I had been trying to build a 7 year old business for the third time due to two cross country moves. It seemed to be an uphill battle against smart phones and the saturated field of armatures using the program mode on popular DSLRs.  I had forgotten why I chose to be a photographer and I was angry at my husband for moving us.  I had met Mary several times while we picked up our children from preschool.  I had noticed her baby bump but never saw the pain behind her smile. As spring bloomed, Mary shared her story and entrusted me with her precious memories during a maternity photo session to celebrate Nathan's life growing inside her.  I wept after our session, and several times in the months to follow.  Through Facebook I watched her family grow stronger in faith and closer together, even in the face of adversity.  Their story of faith and love kept hope alive in my heart, allowing God to soften it, and the process of forgiveness to begin.  I continued to struggle and make compromises, trying to move the mountain that stood between me and my dreams.  In the fall, Mary and my paths crossed again when she and her family joined a life group that met in my home.  Our friendship grew and as October neared, I cared less about the business and more about the art of capturing memories.   I was honored to be able to photograph Nathan's first moments.  I stood in the hospital room waiting for his arrival.  Waves of fear and hope swept over her face as she labored, her faith gave her the strength to push through uncertainty for the sake of love.  I remember being in awe when I first saw him. He had strong hands, his mother's nose, and he was God's beautiful masterpiece.  I left the hospital changed, I had been reminded of how precious and fleeting our lives are.  How important every moment is  and above all God wants us to love Him and each other..  God melted my heart through Nathan and reminded me that it is an honor to photograph His creation.  The mountain before me still loomed but I gained a confidence knowing that I was doing what God called me to do and He would do all the heavy lifting.
__________

Though our lives are but a breath in the scope of eternity, each of us was created for a purpose.  Charlie and Nathan are God's good and perfect gifts to their families.  Charlie's smiles will continue to inspire and Nathan's strong hand's will continue to remind us to hold tightly to Jesus.  The love that we celebrate through their lives could never satisfy the yearning their parents feel. My heart breaks for their loss, and I am forever thankful that they chose to do love, intentionally.

Seasonal Allergy Symptom Relief

Itchy eyes, scratchy throats, coughing, and nasal congestion are all common symptoms in our household during the spring and fall.  We are no strangers to outdoor allergies.  Mine often hit me in early March when the thaw begins.  It always starts with a scratchy throat and a horse voice.  My sinuses become congested usually within the week.  Sure enough I find myself wishing I had taken something earlier to help my allergies because I have a full blown sinus infection.  But it doesn't stop there I will typically develop bronchitis before I can conquer the sinus infection.  I have marked my next year's calender for late February to begin allergy symptom prevention.
Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec, Singular, Rhinocort, Flonase, and Albuterol were all common drugs in our medicine cabinet.  I would take anything to relieve my symptoms, but there was just something that bothered me about handing my eight year old daughter a Zyrtec every morning to ease her allergy symptoms.  I know the miserable experience of allergy season, I didn't want her to suffer, but I also wanted to be sure that I was helping her without causing unwanted side effects.
Local honey is a natural tool to help with outdoor allergies.  My girls love a teaspoon in the morning. They also enjoy the honey filled straws from the farmers market as an afternoon snack.  We have used local honey for the past few years, but have always needed something stronger to overcome the allergy symptoms.  This year I discovered a blend of essential oils that have kept the bottle of Zyrtec closed, and our sinuses open.  I began exploring essential oils about a year ago and they have given our family the freedom to choose a safe and natural healthcare approach without pharmaceutical medications.  We have use them for many things including their medicinal purposes, so I didn't think twice about trying them for our allergies.
There are many ways to use essential oils and they have many benefits.  Our family will use a small shot glass of water, 2 drops of Lavender Oil, Lemon Oil, and Peppermint Oil. We swish it in our mouths (because there is a ton of capillaries and blood vessels for rapid absorption) for 5-10 seconds, then we swallow.  It is an acquired taste, but the instant relief is worth it!  There are alternative methods as well that help with the taste like mixing the oils in gel caps and swallowing or you can combine it with a teaspoon of local honey.  It is important that you use pure, therapeutic grade essential oils, especially if you are ingesting them.  I did a lot research and found cheaper oils on Amazon or at the health food store.  But all of them came with a warning "Do not ingest." or "not for internal use," these two phrases are huge indicators that there is something else in the bottle other than the essential oil.  One oil even read 100% Pure, but when reading the ingredients it read Chamomile oil in Almond oil, but that doesn't seem pure to me.  I am certain that I am getting the most potent, pure, therapeutic grade essential oils with Doterra, not a diluted substitute.  I chose a wholesale membership through Doterra that saves my family money and even rewards us with FREE oils.
